XM Ambassador & Vanguard Programs
??? – April 2024
Your Volunteerism Has Been Noted And Discontinued
For years, Niantic’s most dedicated Ingress players volunteered their time, expertise, and community goodwill as XM Ambassadors and Vanguards—unpaid liaisons between the developer and the player base. In April 2024, Niantic thanked them for their service by eliminating both programs. A new “Player Ambassador” program was announced as a replacement. It is, by all accounts, different in name.
The XM Ambassador (XMA) and Vanguard programs were Niantic’s grassroots community leadership structure for Ingress. Vanguards were senior volunteers who helped moderate the community, organize events, and relay player concerns to the development team. XM Ambassadors fulfilled a similar liaison role. Both programs represented the kind of volunteer labor that is invaluable to a live service game and costs the developer nothing, which is perhaps why Niantic grew comfortable relying on it for over a decade.
On March 26, 2024, simultaneously with the announcement that the Ingress Community Forum would be shut down and deleted, Niantic announced the retirement of both the Vanguard and XM Ambassador programs. The official explanation cited a desire to unify community leadership under a single “Player Ambassador” program. Veteran players viewed it as Niantic eliminating the last remaining structures through which the community could hold the company accountable.
The forum closure was scheduled for April 15, 2024, and executed on schedule—one of the few deadlines in Niantic’s history that was met without delay. Deleting things, it turns out, is easier than shipping things.
The “Player Ambassador” program was promised before the end of 2024. Those participating in Killed-By-Niantic betting pools are encouraged to track this promise accordingly.
